It's intriguing to watch the Gulf states developing right now. All those futuristic sci-fi movies we watched as kids... it seems places like Dubai and Abu Dhabi were really taking notes. We may have dabbled in the 'future', but visit the Persian Gulf these days, and you'll see sci-fi skylines in abundance. The latest state to join the action is Qatar, with Jean Nouvel's Burj Qatar tower (still under construction) and its new Museum of Islamic Arts.

In Biscayne Bay, one mile south of the of Cape Florida, at the tip of Key Biscayne, lies a place where the houses seems to float above the water, as if in some surrealist dream. If you happen upon the place, rub your eyes if you want, but it's not your imagination. You have reached Stiltsville.

Forget bottled Fiji Water. If you travel to New Zealand, to Te Waikoropuru Springs on the South Island, to be precise, you'll find the largest freshwater springs in the southern hemisphere, possibly the world.

Some people live in ridiculously beautiful places. Luckily, I'm one of them. But if I didn't have the privilege of living in southern California, I might take myself off to this island in Norway.

It was a hot day in Seaside, Florida. We had spent the entire day photographing models on the beach. We were all hot and sandy. The last couple of shots I was watching the light changing and thinking how lucky I am that this is my office. As we all were leaving I saw the sand dunes with the last bit of daylight on them and the one stalk of beach grass that was showing up gold. I stayed to photograph this scene while my crew was waiting in the cars. - Jae Feinberg

If you ever find yourself drifting through the desert around Palm Springs, wondering why you're there, make your way to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. As with many things round there, it may at first come across as a little kitsch. And it is... a little. But it's also insanely cool.

How often do we go away on holiday on come back with little more to show for it than a fading tan and a bunch of digital pictures? Visit Domaine de Boisbuchet, a country estate in southwest France, between Charente and Limousin, and you're more likely to come back with a spidery chandelier and handwoven chair -- or at least the skills to make something inspirational when you get home.

We have all seen them. We have all been them. The ridiculous tourist. Those given to childish behavior far from home unleashed by the liberating shadow of anonymity allowed them by the belief that no one is watching. Silly tourist. Yes. We are watching. We are always watching. And this is what we have seen. Take for example these photographs taken of tourists by tourists -- how very postmodern -- at the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

We've all heard of black holes but are unlikely to see one (unless the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland creates one that gobbles us all up). Blue holes, on the other hand, are dotted all over the planet, and available to dive into.
